Two types of emotions
- Affect; which is a short-lived emotional response to an idea or an event
- Mood; which is a sustained and persuasive emotional response which colours the whole psychic life.
Mood disorders have been known to man since antiquity. The old testament describes King Saul suffering from severe depressive episodes and responding slightly to David’s soothing music. While Hippocrates coined the words mania and melancholia , it was Aretaeus who first described mania and depression occurring in the same individual. The manic depressive illnesses as separate from dementia praecox on the basis of course, clinical symptoms and outcome.
Recently, the world health report 2001 has identified unipolar depression as the 4th cause Disability Adjusted Life years in all ages, and the 2nd cause in the age group of 15-44 years. The world Health Report 2001 estimates that there are 121 million people worldwide suffering from depression.
According to the ICD 10 the mood disorders are classified as follows;
- Manic episode
- Depressive episode
- Bipolar mood disorder
- Recurrent depressive mood disorder
- Persistant mood disorder
- Other mood disorders
